Businesses in Ayrshire urged to use Credit Union services.

Glasgow – based Scotwest Credit Union is urging Ayrshire businesses to offer its saving services as an employee benefit. Debt worries is recognised as the second most common reason for people underperforming in the workplace. Scotwest Credit Union is a not-for-profit organisation run by an elected board, which exists to provide safe, competitive and fair financial services to its members.

Their services are free to businesses in Ayrshire. Businesses would have to allow employees to pay into their account straight from their wages. Scotwest Credit Union find from experience that people use their services when it is promoted in the workplace and made easy for them via payroll deduction.

Members pool their savings and make loans to each other at low interest rates. The credit union in turn pays out a regular dividend on savings. All surpluses are reinvested for the good of the members and the local community.

The latest Scottish Household Survey for the Scottish Government showed that 45% of respondents for North Ayrshire and 38% of respondents from South Ayrshire had no savings. This means in case of emergency there is no safety net and often the only recourse is even more expensive debt expensive.
